A Rudd Labor Government

Australia needs a different kind of leadership.
Leadership that is imaginative, forward-thinking and visionary.

It’s time we were smarter about using the great economic windfall of recent years to invest in critical infrastructure and programs that will benefit all Australians.

It’s important that this record prosperity is used to redress a decade of neglect and underinvestment by improving essential services and securing the future for young Australians.

Education, health and disabilities, climate change – these are key policy areas in need of a new direction, significant financial investment and genuine collaboration between federal and state governments.

I’m campaigning for a Rudd Labor Government because I believe Australians are ready for something different - energised leadership and a fresh approach.

Kevin Rudd's plan for New Leadership for Australia includes;

  • An education revolution
  • A national plan to fix our hospitals
  • Decisive action on climate change
  • Balance and fairness in the workplace
  • Maintaining our national security
  • A strong economy that delivers for working families

Honesty And Integrity In Government

I believe honesty, integrity and accountability are fundamental to good government. I value a talented and independent public service, proper parliamentary oversight and freedom of information laws that are worthy of the name.

And clearly this issue is important to the Bennelong community. In July, hundreds of residents came along to my first forum to hear about why the way we are governed matters.

I believe it’s time for a renewed commitment to good governance. It’s time to raise the standard.

A first class education system for all Australians

Every child is entitled to receive a first class education regardless of ability, family income or geography. A smart government invests in its people and its education system because that is how we secure future productivity and prosperity.

Under a Rudd Labor Government that investment will start in pre-school, continue through to graduate level and encourage options for students, whether it is vocational training, language tuition or more university places.

We are a prosperous nation yet investment in education has been ad hoc and not nearly sufficient to maintain standards and retention rates. Currently 1 in 4 students fail to complete Year 12.

A Rudd Labor Government will invest in the future and improve education for all Australians.

Comprehensive and creative solutions to Climate Change

Climate change is a mainstream issue and we need strong leadership and innovative solutions to address the problems caused by global warming.

Doing nothing is no longer an option.
The Labor Party has already announced policies that demonstrate our commitment to tackling climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions, investing in clean coal technologies and making homes and businesses more energy efficient.

Fair and flexible Industrial Relations Laws

Work is an important part of most people’s lives and Australian families deserve an industrial relations system that protects their rights and guarantees safe and equitable working conditions.

A Rudd Labor Government will implement a set of workplace laws that is fair and balanced. Forward with Fairness will ensure security for working men and women and flexibility for employers.

When the Prime Minister and his Ministers attack unions, they’re attacking teachers, nurses, police officers, bus drivers – the very people who provide essential services to the community.

The War in Iraq

There can be no winners in this war and it is without doubt the Iraqi people who have suffered the greatest losses.

The decision to support the US invasion of Iraq was misguided from the outset.

Recognising this, the Labor Party supports a negotiated phased withdrawal of our combat forces, diplomatic efforts to promote political reconciliation and an increase in humanitarian and economic assistance to the Iraqi people.

A military operation will not resolve the sectarian violence. Peace in Iraq and the region will only be secured through political, economic and diplomatic efforts.
